The Votes Are In!

Previously on nyliberty.com, fans were able to vote on the players that they wanted to see featured on this year’s Liberty season tickets. The fans have spoken and the Super 6 players to be featured on this year’s 15th Anniversary season ticket artwork are… drumroll please…

Teresa Weatherspoon

Weatherspoon is one of the original players of the WNBA. In 1997 she joined the New York Liberty in the WNBA’s inaugural season. A talented ball-handler and charismatic leader, her energetic play quickly endeared her to the fans and media in New York where she played from 1997-2003.

  • WNBA #2 all-time in career assists
  • Led the New York Liberty to the first ever WNBA Finals in 1997
  • Started in the first four WNBA All-Star games (1999, 2000, 2001, & 2002)
  • 4x All WNBA Second Team (1997, 1998, 1999, & 2000)
  • 2x WNBA Defensive Player of the Year (1997 & 1998)
  • Hit a memorable court to court shot to tie the WNBA Finals series with the Houston Comets in 1999

Becky Hammon

Undrafted during her rookie season, Hammon signed with the New York Liberty on May 12, 1999. She has a surprisingly solid rookie season statistically, backing up starting point guard Teresa Weatherspoon. Her aggressive play at both ends of the court made her a favorite among Liberty fans during her eight seasons with the team (1999-2006).

  • After the 2003 season, Hammon took over for Teresa Weatherspoon as the Liberty’s starting point guard and along with Vickie Johnson and Crystal Robinson, became one of the team’s co-captains in 2004.
  • 7x WNBA All Star (2003/2004/2005/2006/2007/2009/2010)

Vickie Johnson

Johnson was selected 12th overall in the inaugural WNBA Elite draft in 1997 and played with the liberty through 2005.

  • She was a two-time WNBA All-Star and was the first New York Liberty player to record 2,000 points.
  • In June 2005 in honor of Johnson’s 3,000 points scored, Sandy Levine, owner of the world-famous Carnegie Deli in Manhattan, created the VJ Classic sandwich, a 3,000 calorie belly-busting sandwich.
  • Johnson ended an eight-year career with the Liberty by signing with the San Antonio Silver Stars on February 9, 2006.
  • WNBA All-time leader in games and minutes played.

Kym Hampton

As a key figure in the history of the WNBA and the Liberty, the 6-3 Hampton began her WNBA career against Los Angeles in the league’s inaugural game on June 21, 1997, becoming the first player to score a basket in league history. She went on to start every game for New York during the franchise’s first three seasons. The Liberty’s first-round pick in the WNBA Elite Draft in 1997, Hampton retired from the game on May 26, 2000.

  • Hampton averaged 9.3 points per game during her WNBA career, pulling down an average of 5.8 rebounds.
  • Led the Liberty to the WNBA Finals in 1997 and 1999.
  • She grabbed her 500th career rebound during the 1999 regular season.
  • Voted the Eastern Conference starting center for the Inaugural WNBA All-Star Game in 1999 at Madison Square Garden.
  • In what has become an annual tradition, Hampton closes out each Liberty regular season by singing the National Anthem on Fan Appreciation Day.

Cappie Pondexter

After winning 2 Championships with the Phoenix Mercury, in March 2010, Pondexter was traded to the New York Liberty as part of a three-team, multiplayer deal. She quickly became a fan favorite leading the team to its best record of 22-12 and its longest winning streak of 10 games.

  • 4x WNBA All-star player (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010).
  • 2x WNBA Champion (2007 & 2009).
  • 2007 WNBA Final MVP
  • 2010- Player of the Week 5 times- League High
  • 2010 Player of the Month for August

Leilani Mitchell

Mitchell was drafted by the San Antonio Silver Stars twenty-fifth overall of the 2008 WNBA Draft. Mitchell was then traded to the Phoenix Mercury. During the 2008 pre-season the Liberty acquired Mitchell in a trade with Phoenix in exchange for a 2009 third round draft pick.

  • Initially a bench player, Mitchell made her first professional start on June 6, 2008 in place of the injured Loree Moore. During the 2008 season she developed a strong fan following and a reputation for fearlessness in grabbing loose balls and driving to the basket.
  • Mitchell became the regular starting point guard in the 2010 season.
  • She led the WNBA in 3-point percentage at 48%, scored 9.3 points per game, and had 3.8 assists per game en route to winning the 2010 WNBA Most Improved Player Award.

Leilani has truly become a fan favorite as evidenced by all the leis worn by her Liberty supporters at the end of the 2010 season and during the playoffs.

Janel McCarville: Rebounding CHAMPION!

Indeed, yours truly is the Rebounding champion for her overseas team Famila Wuber Schio. She recorded 18 rebounds in Cup Final Four in Perugia. She grabbed 11 in the semifinals against Faenza and 7 in the final against Umbertide. She suits up in Orange but brings the Real Blue to the court. The Few. The Proud. The Liberty.

The Liberty without Taj McCwilliams Franklin

The Liberty won’t be the same without TMAC. Both Janel and Taj brought excellent things to the Liberty Tmac was a wrecking all for the Liberty. I know she’s gonna do great with Lynx and there offense.

Taj added 10.6 points per game as well as 5.40 rebounds. But as a big man down low she average 2.0 assists. Those were typically the behind the back, back door pass to Cappie or to Leilani. In a single year with NYL, she was 83% from the line as well as being very close to topping her Career Rebounds per game with 0.9. She also added 362 points to the Liberty’s season tally.

Every team needs a veteran player, and if I had to choose one, I’d choose Taj. She can make playes with or without the ball. She can lock things down on defense as well as mashing the defense on offense.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin will definitely be missed. She was so athletic and offered the team so many different

Janel McCarville? Yeah, You know her!

Look G.I. Janel was going over people in College! Man, yall should see her playing college! I’ll definitely be posting Videos of her in College! Goldan Gophers!

Here’s Draft day in 2005! Look at that 40 million dollar smile! She’s got the #1 pick out of Minnesota! This was a proud day for me even though I was 10. Great player with a great team!

Yeah, she got that tip! Janel McCarville started with the Sting! That must’ve been when she started floating like a butterfly but stinging like a bee. Don’t mess with her or the Hive because you will get stung! Physically we will bruise you but she will sting you on the scoreboard as well! Dynamics!

Do you remember these days? Oh, you don’t. Here’s another one!

Yeah, the Game went into Overtime, but who won it for the Lib….Janel McCarville. If there’s any player that you don’t want to have a great game, it’s gonna be JMAC

JMAC just Sealed the Deal! And guess who that’s over..? Does it matter, she does that to everyone! She’s on it 24/7! Every game, EVERY GAME!

Listen, guys, It’s Janel McCarville. Yes, that’s an impossible shot that Jmac has made to win over the Sparks. How did she make it? 2 words: JMAC Baby! Janel McCarville can shut anyone down! But is NEVER shut down! JMAC will always be that last minute go to player that can secure the win!

What do you think JMAC will do next? I’ll tell you what she’ll do, she’ll pass the ball, make a move, get the ball back, and score over 3 people. Yeah, that sounds pretty accurate.

This is that moment I was talking about. This would be G.I. Janel scoring over 2 defenders. Yes, yes, this is an actual picture of JMAC being JMAC. #Conquer

WNBA Season

I don’t know about y’all but I’m ready for this WNBA season. There’s gonna be some new players, some new trades, and some new teams stepping up to the plate. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Liberty will make it to the Eastern Conf Finals again but you better believe they’ll be taking on a Western Team in the WNBA Finals!

If Jmac has anything to with it, they’re well on their way to the Finals! The Liberty are just too good. Closer to the season I’m gonna do an “evaluation” of the 3 hardest teams to beat. Its too earrly to discuss now.

I am so about to be geared for this season. Jmac Jersey on deck with the fly kicks still in the box. Better believe its going dooooowwwwwnnnnn! If you haven’t checked out the WNBA Shiop you need to ASAP. They have great deals every day as well as new arrivals. They’ve got it all! So make sure you check it!

Word app to all my fellow JMac fans. I love talking about JMac with yall. Most of yall are on your toes and know that my previous post was old. Your right! I wanted to add a post so you would have something to look at. But anyways back to what I was saying.

I love discussion Jmac/Micky with you guys. Yall are great fans! Even when I have my mind set on something, yall post something that changes my whole view. so Word app to all of yall.

Down to G. I. Janel. Who doesn’t like Janel McCarville? Uhm…Everyone loves her! What’s not to love? She’s an excellent and funny person on and off the court. She is so unlike any other plater! She keeps it real. We were discussing yesterday, how Nelly is such a essential player. Anything around the rim belongs to JMac and if you try to go up, you will come down without the rock. She’s just an unbelievable player.

Favorite thing about her is her personality that reflects through her hair lol. She’s had so many different ones but you gotta love them all. If you haven’t seen her new look, check it out. That’s where G. I. Janel comes in.

Janel McCarville is one of the most respected person in the WNBA. She’s such a mellow player and teammate. She’s been loved every where she’s been in WNBA and will be if she goes anywhere.

The few. The proud. The Liberty.
